How to Install Cd Dvd Drive in Windows Xp

Srimadhwa B

Hi,

Thank you for posting this question in Microsoft Community.

To provide an appropriate resolution, I would need more information from your end.

1. Do you have Service Pack 3 update installed in the Windows XP computer?

2. Which security software is installed in the computer?

3. What is the make and model of the dvd RW drive?

You may run this fixit and check if this helps.

Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can't read or write media: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us

Additional Information.

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

To do so : Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

Hi,

Thank you for responding.

The laptop where the ROM drive burns has the same version of Windows XP and does have SP3 installed with ESET Security Software with a MATSHITA UJDA7555yDVD/CDRW ROM drive

The laptop that will not burn is again Windows XP SP3 with Microsoft Security Essentials and a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T2ON ROM drive.

Again, even with a new Panasonic USB external DVD-RW attached to either laptop the Microsoft Fix it showed they both were not capable of writing. The MATSHITA ROM drive will now write to both its internal and external ROM drives but only after installing a bunch of burning programs; the Microsoft Fix it still shows them as incapable of burning.

Can this be fixed?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

You may refer to this article and check if you are able to burn using Windows Media Player. You can use Windows Media Player 11 to burn an audio CD containing any mix of songs you want from your library.

Burn your own customized CDs: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-xp/help/windows-media-player/11/burn

Hi,

I tried to burn with WMP 11 and got a pop up that says "Windows Media Player can not burn the files to CD. Verify that the discs are clean and not damaged. If necessary, ..."

This is the same disc used that the other laptop will burn.

Did that help troubleshoot?

I will test that link at a much later date as I am not keen on messing around with msconfig, especially if I am to deselect check boxes for drivers and such.

However,

Is there a way to ensure that the Microsoft Fix it sends my feedback in the box provided after the programs fail attempt to fix the issue?

I was hoping that if feedback could be sent that maybe an appropriate patch for my version of Windows would be issued.

The part of the MS Fix it process where it tells me it can not help me because the ROM is not write capable; "What can we do to improve this solution?" is the title above the text box.

After I enter my feedback and try to send it I get "An error occurred while sending your information to Microsoft. How would you like to proceed?" Is this feature no longer available or is there something not working correctly with something? Every computer I try using this portable fix it program is unable to send any feedback to Microsoft.

Hi,

You may post your feedback regarding the Microsoft Fixit in Microsoft Fix it Center - NOT for general support questions: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/fixitcenter/threads

Thanks.
