How to Make a Large Wooden Cheese Board

diy bread and cheese board

I suppose some of you wonder if "the Husband" is a fictitious character or, if he is real, is his sole purpose in life simply to do projects for Robin.  Well,  t0day the mystery is solved.  Robin has been at a conference all weekend and I thought it might be a great opportunity to introduce myself to all of Robin's friends.

Yes, I do enjoy doing projects.  However, I am a "hands on" kind of a guy, therefore I don't like to stop and take photos or write instructions.  But today I am going to step out of my comfort zone and show you guys  how to make a simple wood bread or cheese board.

I made several boards out of different kinds of wood, you can choose whatever wood you want but I do recommend you choose a hardwood because hardwoods can withstand the abuse that sharp knives can dish out.  I made this particular cutting board out of Zebrawood, and the dimensions are 11″ wide by 19″ long by 3/4″ thick, but again, you can change the size to fit your needs.

Here are the things you will need:

circular saw or table saw

11″  x 19″ x 3/4″  plank ( hardwood of your choice)

jigsaw or bandsaw

electric sander of hand sanding block

100 grit and 220 grit sandpaper

pencil or marker

food safe mineral oil ( most supermarkets sell it)

I started with a  Zebrawood board. DIY Bread and Cheese Boards

First, cut the length and width that you want.DIY Bread and Cheese Boards

Next, draw the pattern on the plank the you just cut.  You can use my pattern or make up your own.  You can look on the internet for different ideas. DIY Bread and Cheese Boards

Then, using either a jigsaw or a bandsaw, simply cut out the pattern

If you happen to have a hand router, use a round over bit to soften the sharp edges.  This will save some time sanding. DIY Bread and Cheese Boards

Either way, you will need to sand the entire piece beginning with 100 grit and shaping the edges as you go.  Then sand the flat surfaces until everything looks and feels smooth.  The do it again with 220 grit until everything feel extra smooth.

Here is what mine looks like before the mineral oil is applied. (Robin had me drill a hole in the handle and tie leather cord for hanging)DIY Bread and Cheese Boards

And finally,  rub on a generous coat of  "food safe" mineral oil.  You will need to apply a couple more coats  over the next few days to protect the wood and reapply every few months depending on how often you use your bread board.DIY Bread and Cheese Boards

And there you have it!  Your own DIY Bread or Cheese Board!

DIY Bread and Cheese BoardsIf you can do this project, it is not a giant leap to making your own thick cutting board or even an end grain butcher block cutting board like the one I made HERE.

I think it took me longer to explain it than it actually took to make the board!  Maybe I will stick to making things and let Robin do the writing!
